Well, it has been a LONG time coming. But I have finally had a new tree fell and will start to build the Quad trail into it this weekend with the hopes of getting the entire tree billeted out before the snow flies.

The tree is quite large, here is my faller before we started.

Attachment:

The tree is 6 feet in diametre at the butt. I am the size reference....

The "good" part of the tree is about 100 feet long and this section terminates at 50" in diamtre.

Last weekend I separated the the heavily branch laden top from the portion to be processed (again about 100' of log) and pulled a small billet just to see the colour and grain. This is the piece.

Hard to see in the picture but the colour is even and the grain is pretty nice, looking like in the low 20's and even spacing. The medullary rays are nice and strong as is typical of Lutz so I am excited to see some processed tops. We actually fell the tree in June and the drying process is well on the way, it has been a hot dry summer.

Anyway, sets will be available soon. Priority is to get the blocks out and into my wood shed and then I will start to process sets. I am hoping to see a range of sets available across all grades, the potential is there but conformation of the higher grades always has to wait until tops are actually sawn.

Just an update!

Thanks
Shane

Oh man. The idea of cutting that thing into billets, hauling them all off, and processing them is intense. That small billet looks amazing!

Shane put me on your list for 4 high grade or master tops. I was just thinking about you the other day, I was going through my top collection and noted I only had a couple of your tops left and was hoping you would be cutting again soon.

BTW, do you have brace wood on-hand that is dry and ready to use? The older, the better.

Nice pictures Shane. If you have the time it would be nice to see more as you start to process the log.
Looks like you will have a busy Fall.

Look at you looking all logger like Shane. laughing6-hehe That's a beaut! How did you track that one down? It looks like it's right on the edge of a cut. That will keep the saw blade sharpener busy.

Cheers,
Danny

Thanks for the pictures, Shane. This helps to show the work that goes into bringing quality tops to the market, and how reasonably priced they actually are! Hopefully you can post more pictures of your process from forest to sanded tops.

Alex
